Friday the 13th

I enjoyed being interviewed by Henry NcKean of Newstalk for the Moncrieff Show today about Friday the 13th and why we are so attached to superstitions ...

Every culture has it’s superstitions. In this part of the world we associate Friday the 13th with bad luck, whereas in Spain it’s Tuesday the 13th and in Italy its Friday the 17th. There’s no scientific evidence for Friday the 13th being any different to any other day, and on some level we all know this, so why do we hold onto these superstitions?   So much of life is random, uncertain, unpredictable. Our minds like to look for patterns to better understand what’s happening and prepare us for what might happen. There’s something comforting in believing we understand why things happen and feeling we have some control.  In an uncertain world it’s reassuring, even if we know it doesn’t make sense!

Have a listen to hear all about Henry’s very scientific ladder experiment in Drogheda, and why you shouldn’t step over a pipe if you find yourself in Latvia!

A key step along the way to a circular economy is to segregate our waste properly, so that it can be reused, recycled or disposed of correctly. The latest issue of PTSB Reflecting Ireland explores the lives of women in Ireland today. As we approach a historic referendum on March 8th, International Women's Day, we look at four aspects of women's lives in Ireland: financial wellbeing, home life, work life and lifestyle & sport. Themes that emerge include the need for women to take more control over their long-term financial planning, evidence that behavioural patterns in the home are changing, a strong desire for gender equality in work and sport, and the importance of female role models in working and sporting life.
